December 2017--From the Commander

My Fellow Veterans,

The Holiday Season is here, and I want to wish every one of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

First, this month I want to start by thanking all of you who helped in making the Thanksgiving Day and Veterans Day cookout a success. Thank You!

Next, I ask that those who attend our meetings and choose to speak, please be concise and make your point, and remember let’s make our views known during the meeting where it is appropriate for discussion, and try not to continue on in the canteen. I would like to get the meetings down to a reasonable length and end these marathon meetings we seem to have fallen into Thank you!

Next the important dates to remember this month include: Pearl Harbor Day, Thursday December 7th, the flag is to be flown at half-staff until sundown. Winter begins Thursday 21 December, Christmas, Monday December 25th, and New Year’s Eve, Sunday December 31.

Again, I ask that we put special emphasis on recruiting new members. Oklahoma is currently in 10th place in membership so far this year, and I also urge that we try to get back to the Community Outreach programs. Thank you for your support and all that you have done for our Post, Our Community and our Country.

Captain Kenneth Novotny, USN Ret.

Commander 2017-2018

VFW Post 9265

December 16th, we will be hosting a concert for toys at 8:00 pm. This is the same promoter that had the concert here in October. Cost is $10.00 or one new unwrapped toy.

December 17th will be the children’s Christmas program.

December 25th, Christmas Day, the Post will be closed to allow the canteen staff to spend the day with their families.

We have been asked by Millard Fillmore Elementry School PTA to assist them in getting American Flags in the classrooms. They told us that currently the students are reciting the Pledge of Allegiance with no flags in their rooms. We are trying to get 40 each 3' X 5' American flags so each classroom will have one. Flags cost approximately $10 and we have already gotten a couple of flags donated. If you could help in this effort, please donate either a flag or the money to purchase one. Flags or donations can dropped off at the Post.

Last Months Activities:

Veterans Day:

On Veterans Day members of the Post and the Auxiliary went to Brookdale Assisted Living Center in Bethany and visited with the veterans living there. It was our pleasure to present them with Certificates of Appreciation for their service and play some patriotic music for them.

After returning to the Post a flag ceremony was performed followed by cooking hot dogs on the grill accompanied by chili, onions and chips. Attendance was good and everyone had a good time.

On Friday some members participated in activities at some of the elementary schools, like Roosevelt in Norman, Mustang Valley in Mustang and Bridgecreek.

VFW Riders:u.5.VFW Riders1315-L.gif

Whether you enjoy riding your own bike, riding with others or just being around others who enjoy riding, come join our riders group.

Sometimes we get together for breakfast and ride afterward and sometimes we ride somewhere and have lunch. Either way, we have fun and comradery with people who share our enjoyment of riding.

The State Riders Group is still selling raffle tickets for a 2018 Harley Davidson Low Rider.

Tickets are $30 each and the drawing will be held in conjunction with the Vander Clute Ride at the 2018 National Convention. Only 1000 will be sold. See Dennis Bryant, Bill Hinds or Rick Musgrove. Tickets are also available from the canteen.
